Can a Student Loan Put a Lien On My Home?

11 min read

Generally speaking, you don’t have to worry about student loans putting a lien on your home.

The only time that becomes an issue is if you’re sued for a defaulted student loan.

Most times, you won’t be sued for defaulted federal student loans. The federal government has too many other involuntary collection powers.

You do, however, have to worry about being sued for private student loans you defaulted on. Private loan holders often sue when a loan hasn’t been paid on in years and is in default. That’s because a lawsuit is the only way they can forcefully take money from you.
